Questiny Brings Old-School Fantasy and Moving Labyrinths to Kickstarter

Independent board game Questiny is bringing the feel of 1980s and 1990s fantasy adventures back to the tabletop, complete with dungeon crawling, a moving labyrinth, and physical swinging axe traps.

The cooperative fantasy game launched on Kickstarter on September 1 and reached its initial £8,000 funding goal within two hours. The campaign has since surpassed 200% funding with support from more than 300 backers.

Designed for one to four players, Questiny sends adventurers on a journey to recover a stolen magical artefact and battle the forces of the Goblin Queen. Players explore dungeons, encounter events, collect gold and potions, improve their characters, and navigate hazards as they make their way toward the Dark Tower. One of Questiny's more distinctive features is its emphasis on physical interaction with the dungeon itself. Players must contend with a labyrinth that can move and rotate during play, along with swinging axe traps that create tangible obstacles on the tabletop.

The game does not require a Game Master, making it possible to play cooperatively or solo. Roleplaying is also optional, allowing groups to approach Questiny as either a straightforward fantasy board game or lean further into the characters and adventure.

Questiny is the debut board game from Leon Simmonds, a professional magician, entertainer, and experience designer based in Sussex, England. Simmonds has spent five years developing the game as a love letter to the fantasy tabletop adventures he grew up playing.

“I think it’s medicine for the modern world,” Simmonds said of board games during a recent conversation about Questiny. “It gets you off the screens, gets you social, gets you critical thinking, all the good stuff.”

The Kickstarter also includes Demons of Drakor, an expansion for the game. Questiny and the expansion have previously been demonstrated at tabletop events including UK Games Expo and Strange Games Festival.
