In a galaxy not so far away, Star Wars is unveiled as Wizards of the Coasts second D&D Universes Beyond game.
Body
There were plenty of surprises during Wizards of the Coast's blockbuster Vision Keynote at Gen Con 2026. Greyhawk is entering a new era. Dark Sun is finally returning to Fifth Edition. Legendary designers are back through the new D&D ICONS initiative, Dungeons & Dragons is officially crossing over with Star Wars.
Star Wars? Haven’t Wizards of the Coast already produced a Star Wars game in the past? Well, yes, two actually. But more on those later…
As part of a brand-new publishing initiative called D&D Universes Beyond,Wizards of the Coast revealed that an official Star Wars setting for Dungeons & Dragons is now in development, with the first release planned for 2027. While details remain deliberately scarce, Wizards confirmed the game will take place during the Galactic Civil War, putting players squarely in the era of the Rebel Alliance's struggle against the Empire.
This isn’t the first time Star Wars has been officially a tabletop roleplaying game, it’s not even the first time it’s been a D&D based TTRPG or published by Wizards.
The original West End Games RPG remains one of the most beloved licensed roleplaying games ever published. West End Games held the license between 1987 and 1999, producing the first D6 System powered rulebook for it in 1987 and producing such a range of fantastic adventures and sourcebooks that Lucasfilm ended up adopting many of the names, planets, organisations, and background details created for the RPG into the Star Wars Expanded Universe. More than 140 books were published during West End Games time holding the license, with a second edition released in 1992 and a revised and expanded second edition rulebook in 1996.
Wizards of the Coast was the next company to license the IP, between 2000 and 2010. During this time they produced d20 (Dungeons & Dragons) system Core Rulebooks in 2000 and 2002, and then the Saga Edition Rulebook in 2007. The Saga Edition was effectively a complete redesign of the d20 system and was very well received. Alongside the core rules came a host of supplements such sa Knights of the Old Republic Campaign Guide, Clone Wars Campaign Guide, and Legacy Era Campaign Guide enabling Gamemasters and players to choose from a variety of eras to set their campaign in.
Next up was Fantasy Flight Games/Edge Studio, who have had the license since 2012 and produced three fully compatible core games - Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, and Force and Destiny. Edge Studios took over the license in 2021 during an internal Asmodee shuffle, and have been handling development and reprinting the books since - including up to earlier this year. It’s currently unclear how the Wizards announcement affects the Edge Studio games.
Wizards newly announced Star Wars game is part of their D&D Universes Beyond range, which was also unveiled during the presentation. D&D Universes Beyond is a new publishing initiative that brings officially licensed third-party worlds into the Dungeons & Dragons rules system. The first of these will be D&D: World of Warcraft, which we’ve covered in another article, which is due for release on 17th November 2026. The idea behind D&D Universes Beyond is borrowed from the hugely successful Magic: The Gathering Universe Beyond which has seen a number of licensed crossover sets such as Marvel, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who and Warhammer 40,000.
The revealing of D&D Universes Beyond certainly gives the impression that World of Warcraft and Star Wars are only the start of many subsequent licensed settings to join the D&D universe for players to explore.
