Gen Con 2026: Wizards of the Coast Announces Official D&D Publishing Partnerships

Wizards of the Coast used their Gen Con 2026 presentation to announce a major shift in how it plans to support the worlds of Dungeons & Dragons. Rather than relying solely on in-house releases, the company is launching a long-term partnership program that will see respected third-party publishers produce official supplements for some of the game's most icnonic settings such as Forgotten Realms, Eberron, and Ravenloft.

The announcement signals a significant evolution in Wizards' publishing strategy, opening the door for studios with expertise in adventure and setting design to help shape the future of classic worlds while ensuring they receive consistent support.

The first group of publishing partners includes three companies with strong reputations for creating acclaimed fantasy roleplaying content.

Ghostfire Gaming will be the first studio to release a product under the initiative, developing a brand-new Ravenloft title scheduled for release in 2027. The following year, Visionary Productions will turn its attention to Eberron. Also arriving in 2028 will be a new Forgotten Realms product from Kobold Press. As one of the most respected third-party publishers in fantasy roleplaying, Kobold Press has built a reputation for high-quality adventures, monsters, and campaign material, making them a natural fit for D&D's flagship setting.

Perhaps the most intriguing part of the announcement was Wizards of the Coast's commitment to expanding the program beyond these initial releases. According to the D&D team, the goal is to ensure that all of the game's most popular campaign settings receive ongoing official support through annual releases created in partnership with specialist studios. Rather than revisiting each setting only once every several years, the new model could allow Wizards to maintain a regular cadence of releases while giving each world dedicated creative attention.

Now, this isn’t the first time third-party companies and designers have been able to produce material for various official D&D worlds. The Dungeon Masters Guild allows anyone to publish and sell electronic gaming products across the D&D spectrum on DriveThruRPG - which has attracted not only casual fans wanting to share their adventures to the world but also a number of veteran formerDungeons & Dragons designers releasing new material for settings they once worked on for Wizards of the Coast or even, in some cases, TSR. Wizards also previously licensed some of its settings to third partty publishers back in the Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition / d20 era - with both Dragonlanceand Ravenloft seeing new campaign books and supplemental material published.

It will be interesting to see how this new partnership program develops. I do note that, at this stage, it seems that it may be limited to one product per year per world/company, so will be interested to see if that starts expanding out to cover more releases or even more than one company producing material for a specific campaign world.

In anycase this announcement, combined with all of the others that Wizards of the Coast dropped on us at Gen Con 2026, is certainly pointing to an exciting time for Dungeons & Dragons and the games fans.
