Gen Con 2026 sees the birth of a new initiative celebrating the creators who helped build Dungeons & Dragons.
Body
One of the most surprising announcements during Wizards of the Coast's D&D Vision Keynote at Gen Con 2026 wasn't a new campaign setting or another blockbuster crossover. Instead, it was something aimed squarely at the game's heritage - and its future.
Introducing D&D ICONS, a new creative initiative that reunites some of the biggest names in Dungeons & Dragons history with the modern design team. Rather than simply honouring the game's past, the programme is intended to actively involve legendary creators in shaping upcoming products, settings and adventures.
For many long-time fans, this may prove to be the most significant announcement of the entire convention.
Over the last decade, Wizards of the Coast has invested heavily in modernising Dungeons & Dragons while introducing millions of new players to the hobby. Fifth Edition, and now the revised 2024 rules, have expanded the audience far beyond traditional tabletop gamers.
The D&D ICONS initiative acknowledges another side of things - that much of the game's enduring appeal rests upon the worlds, characters and adventures created by generations of designers, authors and artists. Rather than treating those creators as part of the game's history, Wizards wants them to become part of its future.
The initiative brings together veteran designers, celebrated novelists and influential creators to collaborate directly with today's D&D team on future releases. According to Wizards, this first group is only the beginning, with more creators expected to join the programme over time.
Heading the programme is actor and lifelong Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast Joe Manganiello, who has been named the initiative's Chief Creative Officer.
Manganiello has become one of the hobby's highest-profile ambassadors over the past decade. Beyond his Hollywood career, he has built a reputation as an encyclopaedic D&D fan, collector and storyteller, regularly championing the game in interviews and media appearances.
His role appears to be less about replacing Wizards' existing design leadership and more about acting as a bridge between the classic era of D&D and its modern incarnation.
The first wave of D&D ICONS collaborators reads like a hall of fame…

Although previously announced at GaryCon XVIII in March, one of the most symbolic announcement is the return of Luke Gygax, who will contribute to upcoming Greyhawk material.
Gary Gygax, D&D’s co-creator, created Greyhawk and ran games for friends and family during its development. Many of the signature characters that came about in the game were based upon the characters they played. One of those characters was Melf, an elven character played in the 1970’s by Luke, Gary’s son, who will be appearing in Melf’s Guide to Greyhawk, also written by Luke.
Dragonlance is returning under the guidance of Tracy Hickman as part of the D&D Icons initiative, with Margaret Weis also involved. Few product details were revealed, but Wizards confirmed this represents a long-term commitment rather than a single release. For fans who grew up alongside the Heroes of the Lance, it's difficult to imagine better news.
Also under the D&D ICONS banner is R. A. Salvatore’s return to develop new Forgotten Realms material centred around Drizzt and related stories. The legendary author behind Drizzt Do'Urden has more than three decades of Forgotten Realms fiction behind him and remains one of fantasy's most recognisable authors. Exactly what projects he'll be contributing to remains under wraps, although his latest Drizzt novel, The Finest Edge of Twilight, was released in softcover early this month (7th July 2026).
Gen Con 2026 has been notable for the sheer ambition of Wizards' roadmap, which we are covering across a number of articles, but alongside D&D ICONS came announcements including:
the return of Dark Sun;
a new Greyhawk campaign setting;
renewed support for classic worlds through third-party publishing partners;
The announcement seem to reflect a growing confidence, or acceptance, within Wizards of the Coast. For years, the company has focused primarily on Forgotten Realms while carefully revisiting older settings one at a time but the Gen Con roadmap paints a different picture entirely.
Greyhawk, Dark Sun, Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms all feature prominently, while collaborations with outside studios promise more regular support for established campaign worlds. Adding veteran creators into that mix suggests Wizards believes the settings exists not only for nostalgia but have current appeal and a thirst amongst gamers and fans to continue to explore these classic settings and see them develop and grow even further.

The first ICONS release has been announced as Greyhawk: Crown of the Witch Queen, a full length adventure set on the world of Oerth. It expands the story of Drelnza, the vampire daughter of Iggwilv the Witch Queen better known to many players as Tasha, first introduced in a classic 1976 convention adventure which went on to be officially released in 1982 as S4: The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth by Gary Gygax. This 160-page adventure is due to be released in early 2027. The book will also be accompanied by a Greyhawk Dungeon Masters Screen as well as a Map Pack.
Very few concrete product details were revealed alongside the ICONS announcement, and that's almost certainly intentional. The initiative is clearly designed as a long-term programme rather than a single release.
For older players, it's a welcome acknowledgement of D&D's rich history. For newer fans, it's an opportunity to experience classic creators working within the modern game for the first time. Perhaps most importantly, D&D ICONS suggests Wizards no longer sees Dungeons & Dragons as a series of disconnected editions. Instead, the company appears ready to embrace the game's entire fifty-year legacy, inviting the architects of that legacy back to the table.
If Gen Con 2026 demonstrated anything, it's that the future of Dungeons & Dragons may be built not by leaving its past behind, but by inviting its legends to help write the next chapter.
