Space Opera Meets Dungeons & Dragons: Neon Odyssey Rockets to Multi-Million Launch

Neon Odyssey, a space opera game using the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition system, dropped today on Kickstarter and has has already gone interstellar in only a few hours. In fact the campaign, from publisher Legends of Avantris, had already cleared $2.25 million in it’s first hour - following strongly in pursuit of the Dungeon Crawler Carl TTRPG campaign that also cracked the $2 million mark in it’s first hour when it launched on 14th April.

At the core of the Neon Odyssey campaign are three huge core books, totalling over 1,400 pages.

Outrunner’s Handbook - The Core Character Book! Everyrthing you need to begin your cosmic journey including reimagined sci-fi classes, subclasses, species, backgrounds, spells, and more.

Cosmic Codex - The Core Setting Book! The whole Stardust Rhapsody campaign setting at your fingertips including factions, worlds, monsters, missions, items, and more.

Overdrive Expansion - The Expansion Pack! Even more of the above to fill out an entire galaxy, plus optional and advanced systems like Professions, Racing, Stress & Entertainmnet, Ship Upgrading, and more.

The game, which uses the popular 5th Edition rules set from Wizards of the Coast’s Dungeons & Dragons 5.5 books, draws inspiration from “legendary sci-fi films, retro video games, classic animation, pop-culture nostalgia, and more” taking you on a cosmic journey with strange new worlds filled with endless opportunities for adventures.

The game has reskinned the classic D&D classes for a sci-fi setting, as well as adding brand new classes and sub-classes such as the Machinist, which allows you to become an ingenious master of engineering and invention. Some of the reimagined classes include the Cryptist (Wizard), Enforcer (Paladin), Esper (Sorcerer), Scoundrel (Rogue) and Gridrunner (Wizard). The books also include over 30 science fantasy species and a bestiary of over 250 monsters, from Arcade Fey made of pixels and polygons to endless bug swarms and space clowns, for your party to tackle.

The crowdfunding campaign is also offering a treasure trove of items beyond the books, many of which are wrapped in bundles with heavy savings attached to them. Reference card decks, 8 different sharp-edged resin dice sets (not to mention the metal and other dice available), loads of miniature STLs, 100 battlemaps, and 3 different plushies are only a sampling of what is on offer.

Despite Neon Odyssey only being their second campaign Legends of Avantris are no stranger to big crowdfunding games. Their first campaign, The Crooked Moon: Folk Horror in 5E campaign, raised over $4,000,000 in late 2023.
