Wild Hearth Blazes Past $2 Million on Kickstarter

Youtuber and game designer Pointy Hat has scored a remarkable crowdfunding success with Wild Hearth: Cooking Monsters & Building Towns in D&D, which has already attracted more than $2 million in pledges.

Wild Hearth is a two-volume expansion for Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition, built around two activities often left in the background of fantasy campaigns: preparing meals and creating a permanent home for the adventuring party. Although, it’s worth stating, that in this instance the meals you’re making tend to be from defeated monsters.

A Recipe For Heroes

Rather than simply carving trophies from falled creatures, adventurers can turn fantastic beasts into meals with useful - and sometimes unpredictable - effects. The cooking material is intended to make hunting, harvesting, and preparing monster’s a part of the adventure itself, giving creatures a purpose beyond providing experience points and treasure.

A Blueprint for Adventure

The second book of the Wild Hearth campaign concentrates on building and deveopling settlements. Characters can establish their own community, attract new inhabitants, and watch their collection of buildings grow into a living fantasy town. Together both books offer a different campaign rhythm to the usual dungeon crawl or adventure. Characters will still venture into the wilderness, but will return with strange ingredients and resources, and then use them to feed and expand the place they call home.

Who is Pointy Hat?

Pointy Hat is the online identity of Antonio Demico, a concept artist, art director, illustrator, and tabletop RPG designer based in Tenerife. His YouTube channel, which currently has more than 570,000 subscribers, is best known for energetic, heavily illustrated videos examining Dungeons & Dragons design.

Demico frequently takes familiar parts of the game and asks how they might be made stranger or more interesting. His videos are often accompanied by free homebew material, including alternative monsters, character options, and his popular reinventions of liches for different D&D classes.

Before becoming a full-time tabletop creator, Demico worked professionally in video game concept art and art direction. That background experience is definitely apparent in Pointy Hat’s strong visual identity and lavish presentation of Wild Hearth.

The project has been promoted with an unusually elaborate anime-inspired animated opening, devised after months of storyboarding, writing, concept work and design. Pointy Hat describes Wild Hearth as the most substantial project he has undertaken, and its rapid passage beyond $2 million certainly suggests that his audience was more than ready for it.
