Coven Blitz brings rival witches and potion-making to Kickstarter

Coven Blitz is a competitive card game from illustrator and video game concept artist Mercedes Rodrigo, which put the players in charge of brewing potions for a range of bizarre customers, while keeping an eye on the competition.

The premise mixes magical craft with the pressures of getting an order out of the door. Players have to collect what they need, make the right brew and beat their fellow witches to a satisfied customer. The game is built around quick play and accessible rules, with individual witch abilities adding different approaches to the contest.

A market full of magical ingredients

Designed for 2-4 players, ages 8+, and with a playing time of between 20-40 minutes, Coven Blitz offers four witches associated with the Alchemy, Enchantment, Nature and Cosmos schools of magic. Each player takes four random cards from their witch’s twelve-card deck, giving them a selection of tricks for the game.

A shared display contains a three-by-three ingredient market, four potions and four customers. On a turn, players can collect up to three adjacent ingredients, spend ingredients to brew a potion, and hand over the requested potions to claim a customer’s victory points. All three steps can happen in the same turn.

WITCH CARDS

Each witch has her own personal deck, featuring her portrait on the back and the objects and creatures that help her on the front. These cards give each witch a distinct playstyle, with ways to gain an advantage and stir up trouble.

POTION CARDS

These cards show the magical potions you can brew and the ingredients needed to make them. Each potion belongs to one of the four magic schools and can help you fulfil a customer’s request.

CUSTOMER CARDS

Meet the demanding customers seeking your magical concoctions. Fulfil their requests with the right potions to earn victory points and get closer to winning. The customer illuistrations are sill in progress.

INGREDIENT CARDS

Gather ingredients from the central market and combine them to brew your potions. The ingredient illustrations are still in progress.

Mercedes Rodrigo

The setting presents its witches as both rivals and members of a shared magical community, with Morgana Moonwyck founding the coven and its four schools. For Rodrigo, the project was born out of a difficult professional change. Writing about its origins, she explained that layoffs and the closure of Spanish video game developer Tequila Works prompted her to put her experience into a project of her own. Her work on Coven Blitz has covered the game design, illustration, graphic design, playtesting and marketing, making it quite a large undertaking for an independent creator. But one, thankfully, that looks really impressive and she should be proud of.

Pledges and a possible solo challenge

The base game starts is availabel at €23, with a second pledge tier available at€37 which also includes an A5 softcover Coven Blitz Artbook. The Artbook not only features all of the games illustrations, but includes previously unpublished sketches and lore from the magical universe. The book also includes background stories about each of the featured witches, as well as information and concept art that led to them coming alive.

The project has already funded, but has a series of stretch goals waiting to unlocked, inlcuding addition customer cards, a new playable witch, and also Morgana’s Challenge which is a solo mode for the game which pits you against the master and mentor of the coven, Morgana Moonwyck, herself.
