Wizards Cancels Worldwide Release of Magic The Gathering Star Trek Beginner Box

Wizards of the Coast has cancelled the forthcoming Magic: The Gathering - Star Trek Beginner Box is every region, citing delays involving production, logistics and shipping.

The Beginner Box had been scheduled to arrive alongside the wider Magic: The Gathering - Star Trek range on 13th November 2026. Wizards announced the cancellation on 21st September, telling customers who had already placed preorders to contact their retailer for further information. Wizards have said that no other products in the Star Trek range have been affected, and the main set, Commander decks, boosters, bundles, and other releases remain scheduled for the November release.

An important entry point disappears

The Beginner Box was intended to introduce both Star Trek fans and new players to Magic. Its contents included two 20-card training decks (Starfleet and Klingon), along with eight additional themed half-decks that could be combined into 40-card decks.

The set would have also included two learn-to-play guides, two playboards, two Spindown life countyers, five double-sided tokens, and a rules reference booklet. The Beginners Box carried a US price of $34.99.

The decision to cancel the set will not only leave what would have been an accessible first experience and teaching product no longer available but could also affect planned demonstrations and organised play activities. Wizards had specifically named MagicCon: Atlanta among the events that were expected to use the Beginners Box and said that plans were now being updated. Meanwhile stores will still be able to teach the game using Welcome Decks and other starter products, while Magic Academy events can also use Boosters for their deck-building sessions.

Another disruption for a major Magic release

Sadly, Wizards have been experiencing a few distribution problems of late.

Reality Fracture, due for release on 2nd October, is already experiencing product delays across several territories. Depending on the region, affected products include Collector Boosters, Commander Decks, Bundles, Foundations Commander Decks and the Secret Lair Bundle. Wizards has also warned that North American Play Booster supplies may be tighter than usual around prerelease and launch.

These problems followed difficulties surrounding the availability of The Hobbit Plat Boosters. Taken together, retailers have now faced three disruptions around prominent releases in fairly quick succession.

A delayed premium product is inconvenient, particularly for retailers that have already taken preiorders. Cancelling an already solicited introductory product less than two months before the arrival of one of the year’s biggest licensed sets is considerably more serious.

The Beginner Box was supposed to help stores welcome Star Trek fans who had never previously played Magic. Those retailers must now refund or redirect preorders, revised planned demonstrations, and find alternative ways to provide that first-game experience.
