Firaxis Games & Modiphius Entertainment Announce XCOM Miniatures Game

If you’re a computer gamer and a turn-based tactics fan then the chances are you have spent more than a few hours playing one of the XCOM series of video games. Modiphius Entertainment and Firaxis Games have just announced the XCOM: The Miniatures Game which will see a return to the events of XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

The announcement was made as part of Firaxis’ 30th Anniversary, although details are currently pretty scarce. You can sign up for more information on Modiphius’ dedicated XCOM: The Miniatures Game webpage.

This isn’t the first time that XCOM has made it’s way to the tabletop, as back in 2015 Fantasy Flight Games published a tie-in co-operative game which saw the players working together to develop new tech and defend the world from invading aliens.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown was Firaxis Games rebook of the franchise back in 2012, reimagining the 1994 UFO: Enemy Unknown (also known as X-COM: UFO Defense). XCOM: Enemy Unknown is set during an alien invasion of Earth in an alternate version of 2015. The player controls an elite multinational paramilitary organisation called XCOM and commands troops through a series of turn-based tactical missions. Between missions the player conducts research and development of technologies derived from recovered alien tech, expand their bases of operations, manage finances, and respond of alien activity and reports.

The miniatures game will more than likely focus more on the tactical skirmishes than the R&D side of things, but we’ll find out more in due course as Modiphius makes more announcements about the game itself as well as when we can possibly expect to see it.

Modiphius have released a number of other licensed miniature games, including Fallout Wasteland Warfare, The Elder Scrolls: Call To Arms and Mass Effect: The Board Game.
