The Munchkin Card Game has spent 25 years making fun of dunegon-crawling roleplayers, rules lawyers, power gamers, and adventurers prepared to betray their friends for a slightly better magical sword. The new RPG seems determined to embrace that with things such as the Oath of the Killjoy Paladin, College of Nihilism Bard, playable Mimics, new feats, spells, cursed items, traps, and a Pun-spiration system. There are even rules for Cheeky Cheating!

The core release is the Munchkin 5.5E: Ye Olde Rulebook, with an accompanying adventure called The Deadliest Dungeon. Familiar monsters, treasures, and other elements from the card game are being converted into RPG form, while Lynnvander says some of the new mechanics are being designed so players can drop them into ordinary 5.5E campaigns as well.

What is Munchkin?
The original Munchkin card game was released by Steve Jackson Games in 2001, designed by Steve Jackson with the distinctive cartoon artwork of John Kovalic. The game essentially turned the worst - or best - habits of fantasy roleplayers into a competitive card game.

Players begin at Level 1, kick down dungeon doors, fight increasingly ridiculous monsters and collect equally ridiculous treasure and equipment to make themselves more powerful. Defeat a monster and you generally gain levels and loot. Reach Level 10 and you win! The complication is that everyone else at the table can interfere, strenthening the monsters you fight, throwing curses at you, or offering you help at usually an extortionate price. Alliances therefore tend to last precisely as long as they remain advantageous. Steve Jackson Games own wonderfully concise description remains “Kill the monsters! Steal the treasure! Stab your buddy!”.

The game become a phenomenon. Steve Jackson Games has sold well over 12 million Munchkin games and its many supplements worldwide, and the range has grown vastly beyond the original fantasy parody. By 2021 an official collector’s cehcklist already stretched to scores of core games, expansions, and mini-expansions - and deliberately omitted 44 licensed properties because there were so many of them! Those licenses have included Marvel, Harry POtter, Rick and Morty, Batman, South Park, Scooby-Doo, Warhammer 40,000, Warhammer: Age of Sigmar, Pathfinder, Conan, Shadowrun and, more recently, Critical Role’s Vox Machina. Steve Jackson Games own home-grown offshoots have ranged from Star Munchkin and Munchkin Cthulhu to Munchkin Zombies, Super Munchkin, and Munchkin Apocalypse.
The game has also become an international it, with Steve Jackson Games listing Chinese, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian editions, as well as earlier editions appearing in japanese. At one point the company described Munchkin as being available in 15 languages, or 16 if you counted Simplifiedand Trdaitional Chinese separately.
Is This The First Munchkin RPG?
No, this isn’t actually the first Munchkin RPG. Steve Jackson Games actually publishing their own Munchkin RPG back during the d20 boom of the early 2000’s.
Beginning in 2003, the company published books including the Munchkin Player’s Handbook, Munchkin Master’s Guide and Munchkin Monster Manual, followed by further released including Star Munchkin RPG material.

Steve Jackson Games has never published sales figures for the original RPG line, but it supported the line with six releases across 2003 and 2004. The adventure The Village of Omelet: A Space Odyssey, which was included in the Star Munchkin RPG GM Screen even picked up an Origins Award nomination. But the RPG sales were dwarfed by the card game, which already accounted for around 30% of the companies overall sales in 2003.
