The ferryman's going to need a bigger boat - 43 years on and Firetop Mountain finally offers a group ticket. Ulisses Spiele brings a cooperative board game version to Gamefound. #RPG #fantasy #fiction #FightingFantasy #BoardGames
At this stage, we’ve all explored Firetop Mountain so many times it feels like visiting a relative. Nevertheless, Ulisses Spiele are giving us another chance to twat the warlock and ransack his home.
Coming soon to Gamefound, The Warlock of Firetop Mountain boardgame promises to reproduce the ‘secrets, challenges, and twists of the original Firetop Mountain book’. It also offers players more than 15 dungeon levels and in excess of 200 ‘richly illustrated story cards’. A combination of ‘dynamic paths, unexpected challenges and events’ ensure that every game is a one-off adventure, the result of which will be determined by judgment and luck.
As with the original gamebook, the game gives players the opportunity to ‘Collect loot and equipment […] and face the many denizens, traps, and challenges of the Mountain’. Those players will also coordinate in ‘fast-paced tactical combat’ and share the weight of potentially deadly decisions together. This experience is enriched with ‘new and original artwork from the famed Fighting Fantasy series’.
The game will feature a number of 45–60-minute scenarios which culminate in a confrontation with the infamous warlock Zagor. Players will rely on not only their own judgement, but also their Stamina, Luck, and skill to plot successfully find—and defeat—their prey. The game is driven by ‘rogue-lite mechanics’ which allows players to ‘improve their chances with every new attempt’. The playing experience is further enriched by a combination of ‘iconic old-school illustrations’, dungeon crawl gameplay, combat and team puzzles; all pf which set the game apart from ‘the standard fantasy fare of dungeon crawlers’.
Unlike the source material, this boardgame version includes in excess of 15 scenarios, each designed to be played in under an hour.
