(Crowdfund Quest) Quartz: The Card Game

Backerkit are currently running a GameFiesta! A curated celebration of 13 award-winning tabletop games developed in Latin America and Spain, plus a best-selling game from Thailand. The titles cover a range of different types of board and card games - from solo puzzles to strategic tile-laying games to party games.

The one I have chosen to highlight, which is also one of the ones I have backed from the event, is by the Brazillian designer behind the best-selling and incredibly fun Sheriff of Nottingham, Sergio Halaban.

Quartz: The Card Game, published by Grok Games, is a quick, highly interactive, push-your-luck card game for 2-4 players built around mining.

Deep beneath the mountains, the awawas have found a vein of dazling crystals, and every miner wants the best haul. These tiny, tusked troublemakers dig, boast, steal, and shout their through the tunnels, turning each expedition into a very loud contest.

Every expedition begins with a single card and a simple choice: take the crystals in front of you, or reveal one more. The longer you stay in the mine, the richer the haul can become, but two Danger icons in the same position trigger a Cave-in and wipe out the entire Exploration Line.

The other awawas are part of the risk. They can steal cards, stop your turn, or make the next Danger icon diasterous, while Defense cards let you block an attack or turn it back on its owner. Build valuable columns, protect the one your rivals want the most, and complete sets of four identical crystals to finish with the highest scoring collection.

Every Reveal Raises the Stakes - You always know what you stand to lose. Stop with a useful haul, or reveal another card and risk a Cave-In that clears the entire Exploration Line.

Everyone Stays Involved - Non-active players can use Attack cards during an exploration, so nobody has to wait quietly for their next turn. Every valuable reveal gives the rest of the table a reason to interfere.

Attacks Have Answers - Steal cards, force an early stop, or make the next danger icon trigger a Cave-In. Defense cards can cancel those attacks, counter specific tricks, and sometimes punish the player who started it.

Quick Game, Sharp Decisions - A game takes around 25 minutes, but your priorities keep changing. Chase higher values, complete identical sets, or spend a turn protecting the column everyone is watching.
