Monte Cook Games have previewed the new and forthcoming edition of their core RPG system, Cypher.
Coming in 2026, this new edition of Monte Cook Games‘ popular, award-winning tabletop roleplaying game system—which powers all of MCG’s titles such as Numenera, The Strange and Old Gods of Appalachia—promises to build on ‘the strengths of the existing version’ and retain its signature ‘fast pace, ease of GMing, flexibility [and] narrative focus’.
This new edition will make it even easier to generate ‘vivid, memorable characters’. GMs will also be able create vivid worlds and engaging scenarios without ‘having to kludge the rules to make them fit’. Better still, because the new edition benefits primarily from ‘improved character generation, corebook organization, and a few specific mechanical systems’, existing Cypher System supplements will be ‘largely compatible’ with this updated edition.
The new edition will be presented in two books. The Cypher Character Rulebook will enable players to create characters in a variety of genres including fantasy, sci-fi, cyberpunk and more. It will also include all the rules for character advancement.
The Cypher GM’s Guide, meanwhile, contains all the additional rules and resources a gamesmaster could need to create and run memorable games—and campaigns—in one of Cypher’s many genres.
Crowdfunding for these new editions will begin later this year. In the interim, See the Monte Cook website for more details.
