Dungeons & Dragions gets it's first Mature 18+ rated official setting with the return of Dark Sun.
Body
For years, Dark Sun has been the setting Dungeons & Dragons fans whispered about whenever conversations turned to forgotten worlds. While Ravenloft, Planescape, Spelljammer, Dragonlance, and Greyhawk have all enjoyed modern revivals in various guises, Athas - the dying world of psionic warriors, sorcerer-kings, and endless deserts - remained conspicuously absent.
That changes in 2027.

During Wizards of the Coast's blockbuster Gen Con 2026 presentation, the company officially confirmed that Dark Sun is returning as one of the flagship settings for the next wave of Dungeons & Dragons releases, marking the first official support for Athas in more than fifteen years.
More surprisingly, Wizards isn't simply updating the classic setting - it is embracing what made Dark Sun unique, announcing that the new line is being designed specifically for mature audiences.

Originally released in 1991 for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition, the setting discarded many of the assumptions players associated with fantasy gaming. There were no benevolent kingdoms, few traditional gods, and almost no hope.
Instead, Athas was a world devastated by unchecked arcane magic. Vast deserts swallowed fertile lands. Water was more valuable than gold. Metal weapons were rare treasures. Tyrannical sorcerer-kings ruled isolated city-states while gladiators fought for survival and psionic powers were commonplace. The setting mixed sword-and-sorcery, post-apocalyptic fiction, survival horror, and political intrigue into something that still feels unlike anything else in D&D.

Rather than softening those themes, Wizards says the new Dark Sun line will lean into them. With the game carrying a mature rating, designers will be allowed to explore the brutality, violence, and moral complexities that have always defined Athas while providing clear guidance for groups about the tone of the material.
Dark Sun is also not returning as a single hardcover, but rather a product range that mirrors Wizards more recent approach to campaign settings - setting expansion, gameplay expansion, Dungeon Masters Screen, regional Map Pack, and a Player’s Handbook. The Edge of Oblivion serves as a campaign setting, Blood & Power will provide player information, as well as rules for the Psion class, and the Player’s Handbook will be a limited edition book featuring alternate Dark Sun artwork.

The return of Dark Sun also heralds the reintroduction of the Psion class to the game. Unlike in most D&D settings, nearly everyone on Athas possesses atleast some kind of psychic potential, making metal powers as common as spellcasting. Although Fifth Edition has experimented with psionic subclasses and Unearthed Arcana playtests over the years, there has not been a full standalone Psion class.
Dark Sun will also include optional rules that make combat more brutal, including rules for decapitation. The book will include guidance for groups to determine how much of the mature material they want to use in their campaigns.
The line will carry an 18+ rating, and will come shrink-wrapped.
