Dark Horse plans extended Baldur’s Gate 3 comic series

Dark Horse Comics and Wizards of the Coast are taking Baldur’s Gate 3 into comics with an ongoing series built around the game’s companions. The publisher has announced two story arcs so far, covering the first 18 issues.

The opening six-issue arc will follow Astarion, written by Alyssa Wong, with pencils by Vincenzo Carratù. Elisabetta D’Amico will ink the artwork, Valentina Taddeo will provide the colours, and Buddy Beaudoin will handle lettering. In the story, Astarion is free of Cazador Szarr but drawn into a murder investigation when a series of gruesome ritual killings strikes Waterdeep. He must find the killer before becoming a target himself.

For issues 7–18, Becky Cloonan will write a 12-issue story following Karlach into the Nine Hells, with art by Francesco Scimonelli. Dark Horse has not yet shared further plot details for that arc, or confirmed how many issues the ongoing series will ultimately run.

The first issue is due in comic shops on 24 February 2027. A preview will appear earlier, in Dungeons & Dragons#2, scheduled for 6 January 2027.

A change from the earlier comics

Earlier Baldur’s Gate comics were published by IDW. From 2014, IDW released a run of five-issue miniseries featuring Minsc, Boo and their adventuring companions, including Legends of Baldur’s Gate, Evil at Baldur’s Gate and Mindbreaker, a prequel to the video game.

The response to those comics was generally warm, particularly toward their humour, characterisation and approachable fantasy adventure, although the light-hearted style didn’t appeal to everyone. Mindbreaker was particualrly praised as an accessible starting point for both returning readers and newcomers.

The new series marks a shift from those short arcs: Dark Horse has already mapped out 18 issues across two stories, with Astarion and Karlach taking the spotlight. At NYCC, Dark Horse editor-in-chief Dave Marshall described the broader move toward longer series for the publisher’s licensed properties.
