Dungeon Crawl Classics Is Coming to Comics

The worlds of Dungeon Crawl Classics are heading from the gaming table to the comic-book page. Goodman Games and American Mythology Productions have announced a new partnership to develop comics based on the fantasy roleplaying game, and then new fantasy adventure modules based on the comic adventures.

What is Dungeon Crawl Classics?

For Goodman Games, the move brings one of its best known properties into a new format. Dungeon Crawl Classics (DCC) is a fantasy roleplaying game built around dangerous dungeons, unpredictable magic, and the pulpy spirit of classic swords-and-sorcery adventures. Players typically begin with a group of ordinary, zero-level characters with only those who survive the opening adventure becoming full-fledged adventurers.

The game uses a version of the d20 system, introduced in Dumngeons & Dragons 3rd edition, but adds it own distinctive touches. There are currently over 100 adventures published for the game, as well as a number of other classic properties that Goodman publish using the same system, with a new Elric game currently in the works.

Who are American Mythology Productions?

American Mythology Productions is an independent US comic-book publisher. Led by publisher Michael Bornstein, the company focuses on comics and merchandise based on familiar entertainment properties alongside original titles. Its catalogue ranges across horror, adventure, comedy, and classic characters.

Some of its published comics include The Three Stooges, casper & Wendy, Underdog, Pink Panther, Return of the Living Dead, Fright Night and Willy’s Wonderland. It has also published comics based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ works, including The land That Time Forgot and Carson of Venus.

What do we know about the comic so far?

The comics will be written by James Khoric, an award-winning writer. His credits include Freddy vs Jason vs Ash, Army of Darkness, Return of the Living Dead, Stargate SG-1, Battlestar: Galactica, and The Six Million Dollar Man.

Comics and RPGs have been part of my DNA for as long as I can remember. I was running Dungeons & Dragons on the elementary school playgorund back in 1980. We didn’t have elaborate terrain or fancy miniatures, we had pencils, paper, dice, and a bunch of kids ready to see what happened when their characters opened the next door. That feeling of possibility has never left me.

I’ve spent my career writing horror and fantasy stories, and Dungeon Crawl Classics captures the same sense of discovery, danger, weirdness, and fun that made those early games so magical. Getting to tell original stories in that world through comics and then connect those stories to adventures people can actually play, is an absolute dream.
