Green Ronin to Publish "Sengoku Doom Metal Fantasy" Nobunaga's Black Castle RPG in English

Green Ronin Publishing has announced that it will publish the English-language edition of Nobunaga's Black Castle, the acclaimed Japanese roleplaying game that blends Sengoku-era history with the bleak, heavy-metal aesthetic of MÖRK BORG. A Kickstarter campaign is scheduled to launch in September, giving English-speaking fans their first official opportunity to experience the game.

Originally designed by Yusuke Tokita and released by Japanese publisher CONOS in 2022, Nobunaga's Black Castle reimagines one of Japan's most famous historical figures. Instead of dying during the Honnō-ji Incident, Oda Nobunaga survives and ascends as the Sixth Heaven Demon King, leading demonic armies that plunge Japan into an age of darkness.

Players take on the roles of warriors who have already been slain by Nobunaga. Dragged into Hell after their deaths, they return to the mortal world driven by a single purpose: revenge. The result is a fast-paced, brutal RPG where doomed heroes battle yokai, demons, and the tyrant responsible for the world's corruption.

With evocative artwork from multiple Japanese artists, and it’s fusion of Japanese folklore, historical fantasy, and doom-metal-inspired design, the original edition became highly sort after, but very hard to acquire on the international market. Green Ronin’s forthcoming Kickstarter wil certainly change that, bringing the game to a whole new market place with it’s English translation.

Nobunaga's Black Castle joins a growing trend of Japanese TTRPGs making their way into English. This year has also seen Sword World 2.5 - originally published in 1989 and arguably Japan’s equivalent to D&D - announced by Mugen Gaming / Group SNE, as well as Octopath Traveller which is due from Dark Horse Books / Square Enix in October 2026.
