PokeSplain opens public beta for Pokemon card collectors

PokeSplain has opened its public beta, offering Pokemon card collectors a web-based place to research cards, follow prices and organise their collections.

The platform covers English and Japanese cards and sets, with tools for checking card lists, tracking a portfolio, creating watchlists, and researching sealed products. Its market features include recent-sale comparisons - often called “comps” - and price history, giving users more context than a single price estimate. PokeSplain describes it s figures as observed market data, and cautions that estimates are not guarantees.

The company says beta users can currently access the platform for free, with Elite features included during the beta. Its pricing page also lists paid plans, including Elite at $99 per month, obviously for the more serious Pokemon collectors out there. Collectors should check the current beta terms and pricing as the test period develops.

PokeSplain is entering an already established field. Collectr tracks collections and their value across Pokemon and many other trading card games, with card scanning, price history and trade tools. PriceCharting offers Pokemon price references based on historic sales, alongside set lists and collection tracking. Pokellector focuses more on browsing sets and keeping track of cards owned or still needed. eBay also recently launched their own Trading Card Price Guide for UK collectors of Pokemon, Disney Arcana, Magic: The Gathering and other games that gives live and historic pricing info among other features.

There are also tools that emphasise particular kinds of price data. TCGplayer’s Market Price is based on completed sales on its marketplace, with TCG Portfolio promotes eBay sold listings comparisons and support for English and Japanese cards.

While PokeSplain’s individual features are not all new, its pitch is the combinaton: English and japanese research, sales context, market history, portfolio tools, watchlists and sealed products in one collector-focused service.

For collectors, the usefulness of any price tool depends on how well it matches the exact card, language, printing, condition, and market being considered. Recent sales can help put a value in context, but they do not guarantee what a card will sell for. PokeSplain’s beta gives collectors a chance to explore the service and help shape its development
