Tabletop Gaming, Wargaming and RPG news in the Fantasy genre

Hobday and Hicks' New Fantasy Miniatures Range Will Launch Soon

A new collection of fantasy miniatures, as created by tabletop gaming grandees Andy Hobday and Paul Hicks, is coming to Kickstarter. Released as part of the forthcoming Barons' War Fantasy Skirmish wargame, this first range will feature those two staples of epic fantasy, elves and orcs.

According to this post on andyhobday.com, Hobday and Hicks hope to secure funding for fifty miniatures for each faction, with a longer term goal of releasing '200 figures (minimum) via crowdfunding within 12 months'.

This new range will be supported by a set of fantasy skirmish rules based on Warhost's The Barons' War system.

A Look at the New Edition of the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game

Games Workshop have published a significant update about the new edition of the The Middle-earth Strategy Game.

As detailed in the update, the new edition focuses on the characters and events featured in the forthcoming anime fantasy film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (due for release in December, 2024). Also, the core mechanics of the game have not seen any major changes, with GW preferring to refine and streamline rather then rewrite the current rules. The update also promises a greater focus on narrative armies, with battles and storylines from the books and movies becoming 'a key part of the gaming experience.'

Two supplements will also accompany the release of the new edition: Armies of The Lord of the Rings and Armies of The Hobbit. As you would expect, each focuses solely on the characters, creatures, and armies from each respective trilogy.

See the Games Workshop website for more details.

It's All Go in the Iron Kingdoms!

The Strangelight Pitch

There's been a marked increase in Iron Kingdoms-related content since Steamforged Games acquired the Warmachine IP. Not only is there the ongoing Kickstarter for the Strangelight Workshop RPG to consider, but we can now enjoy a weekly drop of new material via Steamforged Games' Warmachine Wednesdays updates.

This week's update brings us a peek at the Maelstrom. A colossal machine fielded by the Cygnar faction, the Maelstrom promises to transform warfare in the Iron Kingdoms. Whilst the update doesn't feature this new machine in tabletop miniature form, it does include some lovely concept art (which we have included in this post; you're welcome!). We look forward to seeing one of these on a tabletop in due course ... even if we're not so keen on fighting against one!

Meanwhile, Steamforged Games' Kickstarter for the Strangelight Workshop RPG is now in its final 48 hours. A new game set in world of Warmachine, Strangelight Workshop uses 5e to bring a blend of the steampunk shenanigans we've grown use to via the Iron Kingdoms RPG with the supernatural investigations and interventions normally reserved for Call of Cthulhu.

The campaign has already reached its funding target and is now unlocking stretchgoals. At the time of writing, however, there is only 43 hours left in which to pledge ... so get your steam-powered skates on!

Talisman Adventures

Fans of the iconic fantasy board game Talisman are in for a treat!

Hot on the heels of the fifth edition of the board game, Cubicle 7 have teased the forthcoming release of their Talisman RPG. It's safe to say details are sketchy at best right now, but, with such a rich history of expansions, characters and locations to draw upon, we're keen to see how Cubicle 7 expand that material into a fully-fledged roleplaying game. We'll bring you all the news and previews as they break.

See the announcement on the Cubicle 7 website.

A Nod to the Past From Lion Tower

The Dungeons and Dragons cartoon - and its associated toys - still hit a nostalgic chord with a lot of tabletop gamers. It appears one such gamer is Dan Kelly.

Dan is about to celebrate the fives years since he launched The Lion's Tower with a tranche of new releases. These include a set of Goliath Barbarians led by two minis influenced by the D&D characters NorthLord and Warduke. These two fine miniatures will be available via Dan's Patreon.

So, who wants to see Dan's interpretations on more of characters from the D&D cartoon and toys?
