It is 1403, Bohemia is in political turmoil, nobles are fighting over who should rule, armies are moving across the country and ordinary people are caught in the middle.

You are one of those ordinary people.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance - The Board Game brings Warhorse Studios’ historical video game series to the tabletop, but rather than casting players as great warriors or powerful nobles, everyone begins as an unremarkable medieval villager with little more than the clothes they’re wearing. Where you go from there is largely up to you.

Published by Czech Games Edition, the game is the first collaboration between Vlaada Chvatil (Through the Ages, Mage Knight, Codenames) and Tomas Holek, whose SETI: Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence became one of the big hits of 2024.

What is it?

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a competitive adventure game with plenty of Eurogame elements, set in the historically grounded version of 15th-century Bohemia established by the videogames.

There are no dragons, wizards, or conveniently wandering monsters. Instead, players travel between locations such as Rattay, Sasau, Talmberg, and Skalitz, meet characters, obtain equipment, develop skills and become involved in numerous storylines and side quests.

Players choose one of eight new characters, specifically created for the game, and set off on an open world openworld charting their own course and story.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance - The Board Game is an epic adventure game mixed with euro elements, set in 15th-century Medieval Bohemia. Over the course of several in-game days and nights, players will try to leave their mark, whether by helping the local nobility, making important connections, fighting enemies, or stealing everything from tiny items to horses. While the game is competitive, it doesn’t pit players against one another, but instead allows them to succeed through their own achievements. It uses a deck-building system and emphasizes player freedom, creating narrative through its mechanics. The starting setup may provide some direction, but the game’s open-world nature encourages players to pursue their own goals and shape their stories as they wish.

How does it play?

At its heart is a deck-building and multi-use card system.

Your cards represent the abilities your character develops. They can be played to undertake activities such as hunting, fighting, stealing, or gathering herbs, used to overcome tests, or discarded for immediate bonuses. Experience allows you to add new skill cards and gradually shape your character around the things you actually choose to do.

The game unfolds over the course of five in-game days and nights, with players moving around Bohemia purusing their own ambitions.

Ten storylines can be combined between games, alongside numerous side quests, allowing for plenty of replayabaility as each session tells a different story, and then resets so everyone behins again as an ordinary villager.

There is no player-vs-player combat, but characters can meet in the same location and team up to help overcome difficult tests. Ultimately thouggh, everyone is purusing their own story, and their own victory.

Why we’re watching it

The original Kingdom Come: Deliverance video game has sold over 11 million copies, and its 2025 sequel pushed the series to an even larger audience. When this board game was announced earlier this year it got a lot of attention, partially down to the game, partially down to the design team creating it, and partially due to Czech Games pre-order system that they ran instead of a crowdfunder to guarantee fans would receive the game and they could judge print-run and demand to cater for availability without too much risk.

Pairing Vlaada Chvatil’s experience with sprawling narrative heay designs as as the Mage Knight board game,, with Tomas Holek’s recent success producing highly thematic modern Euros is an interesting combo, while I’m personally also interested in seeing the open world aspect of the game, as titles such as Kolossal GamesWestern Legends get a fair amount of play in my group and the freedom to carve your own story and destiny is a favoured subject.

The game is also large, with the box containing more than 700 cards, ten storylines, and over 200 wooden tokens, with Czech Games Edition describing it as the largest and most complicated game it has ever produced.
